The Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles had presented Korean Culture Day, titled, ‘Hanbok & Embroidery’ on August 31st, 2018.

In Ja Kim / President of Korean Embroidery Council

Today, I introduced various types of Hanbok’s wearing method, using Nokwonsam, Hongwonsam and Hwarot, which are Korean traditional wedding costumes.

So, traditionally weddings were happening in the bride’s house.

She would wear two different ‘속곳’ which means underskirt and on top of these two skirts, she would wear different color layered skirts, 무지개 치마. 무지개 menas rainbow in Korean.

On top of the 무지개 치마, we will apply the blue 치마.

and on top of the blue skirt you wear red skirt.

So, it‘s under the philosophy of the Yin Yang combination with five prime energies and elements in the universe. So, the combination of positive and negative energy of the universe.

This is called

This is a typical combination for the wedding, right before the wedding, the yellow and red combination.

And you wear 녹원삼 on top of this status.

So, that was given by the empress in the royal family when they have a wedding.

And we’re going to wear this sash on top of this garment right here.

So, traditionally we just make one pattern going to one direction unlike the western style in a symmetrical form.

So, this was shown in the 19th century.

So, during Joseon Dynasty, you could tell what sort of social status you belong to depending on what you wear.

For wedding, this is a bride’s hairpin. It’s rather big compare to the usual size.

So, if you located on top of the 첩지 part. It wouldn’t fall down.

So, we call this part 여밈. One is hanging row like this. It means she’s going to wedding. However, if you roll it up, so that you can’t see it. It means it’s for other occasions.

One more thing. So, we need to make sure that she’s going for a wedding. We call this 연지곤지. We’re going to put some colors on her face.

So, 벽사 means wall of the bad energies. So, all these red dots would protect her from the evil spirits.

Before the groom comes in, we're going to cover up her face a little bit.

So, this is what you do at the initial part of the wedding. However, you wait another year and you have another ceremony wearing 활옷. This is 원삼. And 활옷 is little more elaborate to, officially say, greeting your in laws.

So, you see this is a little different from 원삼 that she was wearing previously. And this is 활옷 for the second part of wedding a year after the initial part.

So, as you could’ve observed from this example we had different types of weddings in Korea.

So, all these patterns were the expressions of the parents hoping and praying for safe and good life of their children.

My favorite part about this event was the fashion show. I got to see a lot of different interesting traditional South Korean costumes. And I learned whole lot of about the Korean traditional wedding ceremony. It was pretty interesting and it was really educational.
